Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), a core machine learning method within artificial intelligence (AI), were the focus of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. These systems have transformed fields from healthcare to autonomous vehicles, and their application in environmental science is rapidly emerging. In parallel, Generative AI (GenAI) technologies—capable of producing natural language, data summaries, and visual content—are opening new opportunities in technical and regulatory workflows.
This three-hour course introduces Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs) and other environmental professionals to the core concepts, applications, and value of both ANNs and GenAI tools. After a brief history of AI and its evolution, participants will receive a clear overview of ANN architectures and how they compare traditional modeling approaches such as analytical, numerical, and interpretable machine learning approaches like fuzzy rule-based systems. The course will also cover the use of GenAI for summarizing data, assisting with documentation, and supporting parts of the regulatory process.
Real-world case studies will be presented, including protecting a public supply wellfield from a groundwater contamination plume, data quality screening, identifying homes with lead pipes, and vegetation classification using satellite imagery. Participants will also see how GenAI can enhance research and regulatory compliance tasks. By the end of the course, attendees will have a practical understanding of AI tools—both predictive and generative—to enhance environmental decision-making and regulatory compliance

Instructors
- Dr. Emery Coppola Jr., President of NOAH Global Solutions
Dr. Coppola is a pioneer in applying machine learning (ML), a branch of artificial intelligence (AI), to water resources modeling and management. As early as the late 1990s, during his Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, he demonstrated how ML combined with optimization could improve groundwater modeling and decision support—work that earned a U.S. patent and focused on New Jersey’s now-famous Toms River site.
Emery’s career spans regulatory, research, and consulting roles. At NJDEP and the New Jersey Geological Survey, he worked on groundwater contamination, wellhead protection, and developed the state’s Hydro parameters Database. His environmental consulting in New Jersey covers a diverse array of areas, including site characterization, water quality, vapor intrusion, ecological assessments, and regulatory compliance. Internationally, he has led AI-based environmental projects across six continents and managed research funded by NSF, ESF, USEPA, USGS, and NJDEP. He has delivered ML training for agencies such as Geoscience Australia and spoken widely, including a recent AI panel for the California Groundwater Resources Association.
- Dr. Dan Wang, Director of Environmental AI and Data Science for NOAH Global Solutions
Dr. Wang brings nearly two decades of experience conducting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), water and wastewater engineering, environmental and public health, climate change impacts, and infrastructure planning. She has led large-scale collaborative initiatives, developed innovative data assessment and modeling tools, and designed data-driven solutions to inform policy and optimize resource allocation.
Dan has built strategic partnerships with government agencies, universities, data science centers, and NGOs both in the United States and internationally. In addition to applying AI for data analysis and predictive modeling, she plays a key role in testing, refining, and supporting the development and integration of AI algorithms into operational software platforms.
Dan also teaches AI courses at the University of California, Berkeley, and collaborates with leading researchers at academic and research institutions around the world.
