LAST OFFERED – APRIL 26 & 28, 2022
This program is designed for environmental professionals who are seeking an introduction to environmental forensics methods with an emphasis on real world applications. The course is structured around a variety of environmental media, including groundwater, soil and indoor air.
Course instructors will provide an overview of both introductory methods and options for more complex statistical analyses and data visualization tools. Case studies will illustrate best practices for exploring data and developing lines of evidence that provide insights into the extent and source of contamination and probable migration pathways.
Attendees will learn how to tailor sampling designs to provide information that is amenable to environmental forensics and will develop a greater understanding of the types of data evaluation methods that are commonly used, along with their strengths and limitations. Many of our instructors have pioneered new technical approaches and are actively involved in developing technical guidance in various topic areas.
Working knowledge of environmental chemistry and introductory statistics is desirable but not a pre-requisite.
Featured Topics:
- Vocabulary of environmental forensics – bridging regulatory, legal, and technical disciplines
- Vapor intrusion forensics and identifying sources of indoor air contaminants
- Analytical toolbox and data visualization: bivariate plots, principal components analysis, mixing/unmixing models, interactive tools, fingerprinting
- Biodegradation at hydrocarbon sites – Integrating supporting lines of evidence
- Produced water impacts to groundwater
- Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – state of the science on fate and transport and site characterization
- Using “Big Data” in environmental applications to understand plume behavior and effectiveness of site remediation strategies
- Soil forensics case study of dioxin
- Shale gas migration at Oil and Gas and carbon sequestration sites
