This workshop will appeal to LSRPs and environmental professionals who engage with projects that involve investigating and remediating groundwater impacted with constituents that undergo geochemical transformations in the environment.
Attendees will receive instruction in:
- Fundamental geochemical aspects of groundwater that affect contaminant fate and transport.
- Tools and procedures for collecting groundwater geochemistry data.
- Interpretation of data pertaining to fundamental geochemical parameters.
- Common pitfalls and shortcomings of fundamental geochemistry measurements and data.
Attendees will then be introduced to Geochemists’ Workbench (GWB) software and applications to environmental geochemistry problems through hands-on exercises.
- Introduction to Geochemists Workbench modeling software
- Geochemical graphics (e.g. Piper plots, stiff diagrams, etc.)
- Fundamental controls on geochemical reactions (e.g. acid-base chemistry, redox processes, adsorption, etc.)
Attendees will gain knowledge in characterizing geochemical processes controlling the fate and transport of inorganic constituents and foundational skills in geochemical modeling software for evaluation of site-specific data.
The course requires no previous modeling experience. Attendees are required to bring a laptop computer to participate in hands-on exercises. Instructions for downloading and installing the necessary GWB software will be provided to registered attendees prior to the course.

Instructors
Dr. Andrew Fowler is an aqueous geochemistry, geology and hydrogeology expert with EHS Support, LLC. He has worked extensively on environmental investigation/remediation and water/energy resource projects during his 20 years of combined consulting and research experience. Andrew has served as the technical lead and subject matter expert on numerous projects throughout the United States and internationally, collaborating with potentially liable party groups, client organizations, regulators, and other consultants. Andrew has also served as an expert witness on litigation cases involving the geochemistry and hydrogeology of contaminated sites.
Andrew applies his unique multidisciplinary expertise to developing robust conceptual models and remediation strategies that address the fate and transport of metals, inorganic ions, hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents in a range of complex environmental settings. Andrew also leverages his expertise in geochemical aspects of water resources, including high-temperature geothermal resource exploration, carbon capture and storage monitoring, and groundwater affected by ore processing byproducts.
Andrew has worked on projects at active and decommissioned facilities involving aspects of mining and ore processing/smelting, oil refining and distribution, coal combustion residual (CCR), municipal and industrial landfills, metal fabrication, and chemical manufacturing. Andrew is well versed in communicating complex scientific concepts to industry clients, public stakeholders, and regulatory agencies. He is an accomplished technical writer and has written and edited countless documents for environmental remediation projects and high-profile scientific journals.
Dr. Brady Ziegler is a Project Hydrogeologist at Quantitative Hydro Solutions, Inc., and a former Associate Professor with extensive experience in environmental research and hydrogeologic modeling. He specializes in water-soil interactions with a focus on water and soil quality. He has over 13 years of field experience leading groundwater sampling campaigns across the country and abroad.
Dr. Ziegler transitioned into environmental consulting in 2025, where he uses a variety of modeling tools to evaluate groundwater flow, solute transport, and water quality. He has applied his knowledge and expertise on a variety of projects, including water supply well field siting and permitting projects, modeling analyses to evaluate impacts associated with saltwater intrusion and sea level rise, and fate and transport modeling analyses to support remedial planning.
Dr. Ziegler has also provided technical expertise on litigation matters, including those involving CERCLA cost recovery and cost allocation. He holds a B.S. degree in Environmental Sciences form the University of St. Thomas, and a PhD in Geosciences from Virginia Tech, with a focus on Hydrogeosciences.
