(IN-PERSON HANDS-ON COMPUTER COURSE)
8:00am-5:00pm
(Registration begins at 7:30am)
Registration Fee: $375-$395
Using your own fully charged computer, this live in person hands-on computer workshop will appeal to LSRPs responsible for planning groundwater remedies and to engineers and environmental professionals who need an easy “non-modeling” way to calculate groundwater flow and aquifer response for a variety of common engineered systems, including:
- Extraction wells
- Collector trenches
- Slurry or sheet pile walls
- Permeable reactive barriers
- And funnel and gate remedies
Attendees will be introduced to a set of “calculators” that have been developed with, and are run using, the free AnAqSim EDU groundwater modeling software package. These calculators serve as easy to use screening tools that can be utilized to produce preliminary remediation designs.Attendees will receive instruction and participate in a series of hands-on exercises using these calculators. They will evaluate:
- Aquifer drawdown
- Optimize pumping well extraction rates
- Determine groundwater flow paths, velocities, and residence times
- Estimate system capture zone extent
- Create graphics with groundwater contours and pathlines
- And examine other aspects of groundwater flow that should be considered when designing, evaluating and optimizing groundwater remediation systems
Finally, attendees will also learn how to incorporate site-specific data and features into the calculators, export data for further analysis, and generate report-ready graphics.

Instructors
- Mark Kauffman – President/Senior Environmental Scientist – QHS Consulting
Mr. Kauffman is a Senior Environmental Scientist and President of Quantitative Hydro Solutions, Inc. (QHS Consulting), with special expertise in hydrogeologic site investigations, analysis and interpretation of complex geospatial data, environmental forensic techniques, and ground water and contaminant transport modeling.
He has applied his expertise on a number of projects, including visualization and analysis of site data to help guide remedial actions at DoD facilities, water supply well field siting and permitting projects, and modeling projects to evaluate groundwater flow and the fate and transport of contaminants (including modeling to support Classification Exception Area (CEA) delineation). Mr. Kauffman has also provided technical expertise in dozens of litigation matters, including those involving insurance litigation, CERCLA cost recovery and cost allocation, and Natural Resource Damages.
Mr. Kauffman holds a B.S. degree in Environmental Studies from Temple University, and has completed graduate work and has participated in continuing professional education on a variety of topics, including groundwater modeling, contaminant fate and transport, and environmental forensics.
- Jeff Farrell, P.G., LSRP – Principal Hydrogeologist – EHS Support
Jeff is a Professional Geologist, Hydrogeologist, and New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) with over 30 years of experience in site remediation and hydrogeology. He has guided numerous projects through complex regulatory frameworks, delivering cost-effective solutions for soil, vapor, and groundwater contamination.
Jeff’s expertise spans hydrogeological assessments, conceptual site modeling, and remediation strategies for emerging contaminants, with a strong focus on integrating field data and practical methodologies to achieve successful outcomes. His diverse background, leadership skills, and technical acumen have earned him recognition for driving impactful results in challenging environmental scenarios, and his strong interpersonal and communication skills have enabled him to create innovative solutions to complicated problems.
Mr. Farrell has a B.S. degree in Geology and Geochemistry (double major) from Northern Arizona University, and an M.S. degree in Hydrogeology from Purdue University.
